the art and craft of making 10 second movies…

iMovie ‘08 vs iMovie ‘06 – Which is better?

Making 10 second movies requires precision from movie editing software. If you are making movies with one of the higher end editing and animation tools like Final Cut Pro, Flash, or After Effects, you’re set. But those applications are priced beyond the reach of the average user.

Apple has always had a solid editing program bundled with its computers. iMovie can get you up and crafting movies in no time. But this year Apple released a new version of iMovie that completely overhauled the interface and significantly changed the way movies are made. They eliminated the traditional timeline based approach and developed a drag and drop system that is fine for general home movies (once you learn how to use it) but not the best approach for making movies where you need more precise control and synchonization between sound and image.

Fortunately enough people cried foul, that Apple posted iMovieHD06 as a free download for users of iMovie ‘08.
It is available here.

iMovie ‘08 is still a pretty slick little program and Apple has a series of very good tutorials on their site to get you up to speed.

For seasoned users of iMovie and other professional editing tools it can be a shock at first, but after awhile you’ll get the hang of it.
